Once, when I was an English Lit student, as I was walking down the hallway of the department, late for a class, I nearly bumped into our expert on Shakespeare. I took advantage of the situation and asked him, point blank, “Is it true that Shakespeare was a god?” He had a mock shock look on his face, then smiled, and held his right forefinger up to his lips. It was the loudest I ever heard.
